PART I: PERIODONTAL DISEASES IN CHILDREN
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Introduction
Key point:
1)Recent recognition that periodontal disease may have its origins in childhood has led dentists to be more aggressive in treatment.
2)Studies confirm a high prevalence of gingival inflammation in children.
3)Periodontal conditions that progress rapidly and result in the loss of primary and permanent teeth have been noted with increased frequency.
4)Therefore the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s recommendations for children and adolescents include placing greater emphasis on the prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of gingival and periodontal disease in children.
5)By the establishment of excellent oral hygiene habits in children, which will carry over to adulthood, the risk of periodontal disease is lowered.
