Kolkata is the third largest city in India and the fifteenth largest in the world, with a population of over 15 million. The English name of the city was officially changed from Calcutta to Kolkata in 2001 to reflect the local pronunciation. Under British rule, it was the capital of India until 1911.
Traditionally, it was a center for education and literature in the Bengali culture. Now the city has a manufacturing economy and produces cars, railway coaches, chemicals, jute products, electronics, and a huge variety of other goods. Kolkata has a tropical climate and receives most of its rain during the monsoon season in August.
