       There are a number of survival schools in the United States, and BOSS is considered the most physically demanding. Participants carry only a knife, water cup, blanket, and poncho (斗篷). They are told that they could lose as much as 20 pounds (8 kilograms) of body weight during their course. Some of the skills they learn include catching fish with their hands and killing a sheep with a knife. In 2007, there was a controversy when one BOSS participant died of thirst during a field course in Utah with 12 other people. Their guides were carrying emergency water but did not offer him any.
