The Challenges of Studying Abroad
Nowadays, a growing number of students have planned to go abroad for further studies. Whether they are to pursue a bachelor’s degree or master’s, most of them will have to be faced with quite a lot of challenges in their overseas lives.
Two of these challenges have exerted great influence on international students. One is the linguistic barrier. For example, many Chinese students in America find it difficult to communicate with native speakers despite the fact that they have achieved high scores in IELTS or TOEFL. The reason for this is that these Chinese students have learned how to speak standard English instead of abbreviations and acronyms popular in conversational English. The other is different dietary habits. Most westerners prefer meat while students from China have been used to a balanced diet including a variety of vegetables. Therefore, some of Chinese students will probably have a hard time in western countries in the first few months, or even for a longer time.
In short, students abroad need adapt to the challenges so that they can realize their dreams.
