12. Research journal article--Legends for tables and illustrations
Refer to the Instructions for/to Contributors/Authors and a recent issue for specific details. In general, verb tenses are used in the following manner (13.1).

Present tense | When referring to what is in the table or illustration |

Past tense | When referring to what was done in the study |
One caution with tables and figures is that they should be used only when necessary. If the table or figure is a very simple one with information which can easily be incorporated into the text, you get reviewer comments such as that shown in 13.4.
