Food and culture

Let's discover how to talk about traditions and food

Now we are in the month of April and in the West April Fool's Day and Easter is coming up. Whereas, in the East we are expecting the Ching Ming Festival (also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day in English),setting us in a very different mood.

In this session, we want to talk about how we can have a conversation about traditions and the different kinds of food that we eat when we celebrate holidays home and abroad. I want to start this with some celebration vocabulary. There are many different words we can use in English other than just to "celebrate".

Celebration Vocabulary

  • observe (a holiday)

  • party

  • fete

  • feast

  • let loose

  • have a ball

Tradition food and drink in English-Speaking countries

  • turkey, stuffing, pumpking pie

  • roast dinner

  • corned beef and cabbage

  • champagne, mulled wine, eggnog

Other traditions

  • meal with family and friends

  • gift exchange

  • singing, watching sports, going to the movies

Food vocabulary

  • to dig in

  • to chow down

  • to pig out

  • leftovers

Talk about traditional food

  • This ______ is delicious. What's the recipe?

  • You make it with _____.

  • How should I eat this ?

Tell me about your traditions

  • What do you eat at celebrations (Chinese New Year, Christmas, birthday, etc)?Share a recipe!

  • Have you ever hosted a party? How would you invite someone?

  • What's a special tradition in your family?

以上内容与视频课相关。主要是学会描述或者讨论中西方的食物与节日。

下面是一些描述节日的小视频,难度比较低,都配上了英语字幕,同学们可以跟读,学习表达:
