The maxims of quality, relation, and manner
The quality maxim: be truthful and do not say things you know to be false. Do not say that for which you lack adequate evidence.
Irony is not the only effect that is brought about by the deliberate denial of this maxim.
The maxim of relation:make what you say relevant to the topic or purpose of the communication.
The maxim of manner: be clear, avoid ambiguity and obscurity.
This maxim has to do with what Hymes refers to as feasibility (Unit 2).
Unintentional violations of this maxim can have comical consequences.
But not all violations are unintentional. They can also exploited to produce deliberate ambiguity so as to attract attention.
Co-operation necessarily involves some encroachment on this individual life space, and the area of convergence is a potential site of contention between self and other.
