Systemic and schematic knowledge
Schematic knowledge refers to knowledge of schemata that are operative within a particular community of language users.
Systemic knowledge refers to knowledge of a language as an encoded system, of what in Hymes' terms is possible in a language.
So schematic knowledge provides us with a set of default assumptions: it projects provisional expectations which are subject to on-line revision as we proceed in deriving discourse from text.
