Listen to a passage three times and while listening, you are to put the missing word in each numbered blank according to what you hear.
Parkinson’sdisease is a (1) disorderof the central nervous system. It is a disease that makes its victimsincreasingly unable to move. It affects a small area of cells in the middle ofthe brain called the (2) substantia nigra. The cells slowly lose their ability to produce achemical called dopamine. The (3) reduced levels of dopamine can result in one or moreof the (4) generalsigns or symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
Thesesymptoms include (5) shakingof the arm or leg on oneside of the body. Other symptoms are a general (6) slownessofmovement, or severe difficulty in moving the arms and legs. Another isdifficulty walking and keeping (7) balanced while standing or walking.
Other signsobserved in some people include (8) restricted or decreased movement of the face. Also,victims of Parkinson’s disease can feel sad or worried. Victims may (9) swallowless often than normal. And, they may havedifficulty (10) formingwords while talking.
Most of thosesuffering from the disease are older people. It (11) reportedly affects one of every onehundred people over sixty years old. However, 15 percent of patients (12) develop thedisease before they are 50 years old. Also, it affects men a little more oftenthan it affects women. And Parkinson’s disease can be found among people in allparts of the world.
