Word building
  1. Word building - Learning


    The suffix -ence combines with verbs to form nouns. Nouns formed in this way refer to the action, process, or state described by the original verbs.

    Examples


    occur ➝ occurrence
    correspond ➝ correspondence

    The suffix -er combines with verbs to form nouns. (For explanation, refer to Word building in Unit 5.) 

    Examples


    boil ➝ boiler
    carry ➝ carrier
    browse ➝ browser

    The suffix –ly combines with adjectives to form adverbs. Adverbs formed in this way express the idea that something is done in the way described by the adjective. Sometimes -ly can also combine with nouns to form adjectives.

    Examples


    normal ➝ normally
    approximate ➝ approximately
    cost ➝ costly

    The suffix –ion combines with verbs to form nouns. (For explanation, refer to Word building in Unit 3.)

    evolve ➝ evolution
    explode ➝ explosion
    perceive ➝ perception
    assume ➝ assumption
    persuade ➝ persuasion
