Differences and similarities between learning L1 and L2

目标

1. analyze some cases of helping children  learn English

3. list as many  activities as possible used in the primary English classroom

4. discuss the  appropriateness of these activities after watching a video tape of a primary English  class

5. get to know the principles of  designing activities

6. get the features of the choice lesson

Procedures:

Step1.Lead in

Ss talk about the ways bywhich we can minimize the differences between L1 learning and L2 learning so asto make learning another language easier and with more success.

Teacher leads in the topic of this lesson: Howcan we help children learn a foreign language.

Step2.Reading 1.2.2

 1. Ssread the reading material on page26, “什么是好的英文教学法?”,and make a list of suggestions for teaching English to children.

 2. Exchangetheir understanding of the material with the whole class.

1) 提供一个丰富的语言环境:

如何给孩子提供丰富的语言环境?

丰富的语言环境对孩子学英语有什么作用?

2) 检视提供给孩子英文的方式:

应当以什么方式提供孩子英语?

3.Provide some cases for Ss to discuss: how does the teacher help her students tolearn English?

Step3.Task 1.2.2

Providesome cases of helping children learn English for Ss to analyze.

  1. Ioften point to something and tell my child what it is in English and ask him toname it whenever he sees it.

2. I play English songs every day at home and let mychild watch English cartoons and listen to English stories. I never force herto speak

3. I hope my child can learn English as early aspossible so I teach him one hour every day. Usually I ask him to read after meagain and again until he can say it correctly.

4. I think grammar and vocabulary are the mostimportant in learning a foreign language. They are the focus of my teaching.

5. I ask my child to translate 5 sentences every day.

6. I often organize games for my students to do roleplay in the class. They learn to use the language to do shopping, order food, askingfor direction, etc.

Ssdiscuss these cases one by one from the advantages and disadvantages.(see ppt)

GuideSs to analyze them from the following aspects: attitude towards, learningcontents (language knowledge, skills), learning ways.

Step4.Discussion points

1. Ss make some suggestions for how tobetter help children learn a foreign language.

2. Exchange the discussion results with thewhole class.

  1) Createa better environment

Natural, supportive, tolerant

  2) Providemore opportunities to hear and to say

Hearing before saying, experiment

  3) Designinteresting and motivating activities

  4)extra language features(超语言因素)

Ss give the ownopinion about ways of helping children learn a foreign language.

Step5. Activities used in primary English teaching

1. Ask Ss: how can we put theseimplications into our practice of designing activities?

Is it good for Ss to improve their learningstrategies?

How do these activities help with theachievement of the teaching objective?

1) The features: Real context/Meaningful: 真实自然并贴近学生生活的任务——谈论周末出行计划

Interactive -生,生-生

Interesting exterior变魔术

         Interior 话语权交给孩子,如自由提问,自主选择角色、出行方式及地点;在交流中体验成功的快乐

Natural真实自如的语言;抓住学生的现场生成,进行自然真实的交流;使用并提示孩子运用discourse marksgreat, so,sounds great, etc.

Ss think: How can we design activities based on teaching objectives? ---principles

情景匹配原则(context matching),

扩充性原则(extension,

交际性原则(communication),

活动性、趣味性原则(activity, interest),

视听说与读写结合的原则(integrating looking, listening and speaking with reading and writing ),

重复性原则(repetition),

尽量用英语上课,同时恰当地借助母语(teaching in English)

Step7. Conclusion

1. Ss discuss: are the activities, such as recitingwords and dialogues, doing written exams, appropriate for pupils?

2. Discussion points

   Rememberingall the phonetic symbols does not automatically guarantee good pronunciation;

   Getting toknow the rules of grammar does not guarantee good communication;

   Childrenoften become tired and bored by learning and reciting the phonetic symbols orstructure-based dialogues;

Childrengradually lose confidence and interests in learning the language when they cannot find it enjoyable and when they fail to do the tests well.

3. Ss read the ten principles on Page 9.
