   2.2 Nomenclature of Alkanes

In this section, you need to know the following information: 

1) Naming of unbranched carbon chain with ending -ane 

Methane, ethane, propane, butane, pentane, hexane, heptane, octane, nonane, decane

2)  Naming of branched carbon chain

  IUPAC Rules:

step 1: find the parent  structure

step 2:  numbering parent  structure to determint the numbers and names of substituent

step 3: write the names of the alkanes
