     Chinese Table Manners a Foreigner Should Know

     If my foreign fiend comes to visit China, I think it’s my honor and responsibility to introduce some Chinese customs such as table manners to him/her in order that he /she can avoid making mistakes and enjoy a wonderful time.

     As to Chinese table manners, there are at least three points a foreigner should know. To start with, instead of using knives and forks when eating, we often apply chopsticks which are difficult for a foreigner to use. In addition, it’s important to put our glasses lower than that of the one who is senior or superior to us when toasting. We act like that in showing our respect to the senior and the superiors. Last but not least, we Chinese prefer to talk about business affairs and other important things at table.

     As the saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” Table manners play a very important role in Chinese culture. Therefore, it’s a good way to leave a good impression on the local people if a foreigner pays more attention on his / her table manners.
