Historical Background and Literary Scene of the Period

The major literary tendency in this period was Neo-classism, Alexander Pope

was the leader. Fiction came into being as a literary genre. The representative novelists of this period were Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding and Jonathan Swift. Besides, there appeared some pre-romantic writers such as Thomas Gray, Robert Burns and William Blake. Sentimentalism was another important tendency in literature.
