The 17thcentury witnessed the revolution and restoration in England. In this period, drama didn't develop well because of the historical facts. In poetry, JohnMilton was the most famous and successful writer. John Donne, who led themovement of metaphysical poetry, was another significant figure. In prose, JohnBunyan, who wrote The Pilgrims Progress, was a prominent one.
The period under discussion was one of transition, chaos, and great perplexity. The old value system was on its way out, new values were taking shape, and the conflict generated an acute sense of loss, which was felt on all conceivable levels of life in terms of certitude, faith, and honor. This led to the attempt to seek certainty and intellectual harmony on the one hand, and to address the question of values through violence adn sexuality.
The prevalent mood that enveloped literary works was one of gloom, pessimism, decadence, and frivolity. The literary scene of period was by no means prolific, but a few names stood out to be remembered. These include John Donne, John Milton, and John Bunyan.
