What is Logistics?

  MIn the course of “LogisticsEnglish”, the instructor is talking with five students (A-E) about the definitions oflogistics.

GCan you give your definition of logistics?

W: Logistics means that you manage theprocurement and movement of goods and the storage of inventory.

L:  Itmeans the delivery of the goods the customer needs at the right time, in theright place, and of the right quality.

M: : My definition of logistics is this: it’sto plan, organize, and manage operations that provide services and goods.

X: Logistics-that is the purchasing,maintenance, distribution, and replacement of material and staff.

L: Logistics is the planning and support ofoperations such as warehousing, inventory, transport, procurement, supply, andmaintenance.

G: You are right. Actually, there is acollection of logistics definitions. In this course, we adopt the currentdefinition provided by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals,that is: Logistics is the process of planning, implementing, andcontrolling the efficient, effective flow and storage of goods, services, andrelated information from point of origin to point of consumption for thepurpose of conforming to customer requirements.

         Talk about Logisticsand Logistics Industry

G:Allen Smith, a logisticalprofessor from the United States, is talking to Li Hui a Chinese student who iskeen to know more about logistics.

 

X: Good afternoon, Mr. Smith. I’m here for someinformation about logistics.

L: Is logistics appealing to you?

X: Yes, I’m quite interested in it. It soundslike something new, a newborn baby.

L: No, it is anything but a newborn baby. Itcame into being with the advent of civilization.

X: Does modern logistics mean transportationand delivery?

L: It’s not the whole story. Modern logisticsis related to the effective and efficient flow of materials and information.They are vital to customers and clients in various sectors of the economicsociety. It includes packaging, warehousing, material handling, inventory, transportation,and so on.

X: Oh, it’s such a complex system.

L: Yeah, it is the systematic management of thevarious activities.

X: What about the present situation in relationto logistics in China?

L: Good question. China is developingamazingly. The new economic growth needs more logistics experts, but Chineselogistics is at the infant stage though Chinese people have made a lot of attemptsduring the past decade.

X: I agree with you.

L: You know, the total cost in China is highercompared to that in industrialized countries. It should be lowered. So youyoung people can make headway in logistics and herald the new economic growth.

X: Thank you for your information. I’m moreconfident in my future career concerning logistics.
