Course description
Despite its title, this is an upper division level course in economics, although there is a tilt toward financial issues. The course deals with issues in international macroeconomics that emerge as a result of trade in goods and services and financial assets. International transactions are often complicated by the existence of an exchange rate, the price of one country’s currency relative to another. Thus, the course begins with an introduction of the exchange rate market, a discussion of balance of payments, and a discussion of various exchange rate regimes. We will present the relationship between interest rate differentials and exchange rate movements using the concept of covered interest rate parity. Time permitting, the final phase of the course will include a discussion of theories related to exchange rate determination.

The second part of the course explores macroeconomics—the behavior of the economy at the broad or aggregate level. We examine the sources of long-run economic growth as well as the explanations for recessions that are the defining features of business cycles. We examine the determinants of national inflation rates. We examine how governments can influence growth, business-cycle fluctuations, and inflation. We specifically examine the global financial and economic crisis and its aftermath.

Course Objectives

Bythe end of the course, the successful student should be able to do each of thefollowing:

1.You will have mastered an understanding of the exchange rate market. Inaddition, you will be

ableto assess the importance of this global market.

2.You will gain a general understanding of the modern empirical theories ofinternational

finance.

3.You will gain insight into the areas where empirical international finance andtheoretical

international financesometimes differ.

Course Requirements and Grading Policy

Course grades will be based on the following:

Attendance and class performance, 10 percent

HW Assignments and presentation in class, 15 percent

Mid-term test1 December 18, Wednesday (tentative), 25 percent

Final exam January 10, Friday, 50 percent

Your total score = Attendance and class performance × 0.10 + HW Assignments and presentation in class × 0.15 + Mid-term test 1 × 0.25 + Final exam× 0.50

Due to their inherent unfairness, there will be no make-up exam for midterm test.

According to the school rule, there will be make-up exam for final exam, which will be at the beginning of the next semester.

Course Textbooks & Materials

Most of the required reading is in the textbooks for the course:

Thomas A. Pugel, International Economics, fifteenth edition, Irwin McGraw-Hill, 2012.  (Abbreviated P).

Paul Krugman and Robin Wells, Macroeconomics, second edition, Worth Publishers, 2009.  (Abbreviated KW).

Supplementary materials:

The Economist magazine;

The Wall Street Journal;

FRED (https://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/) Database

I strongly suggest that you read (perhaps quickly) the assigned reading before the class discussion of the topic.  In the class discussion I will usually cover the concepts and issues that are most important and most challenging, reinforcing and extending what is in the required reading.  I suggest that after the class session you review the assigned reading to solidify your understanding.

It is highly recommended to keep up with current economic developments, both for class purposes and for your own benefit.  You can do this by reading the relevant articles in a good newspaper.  You are encouraged to bring up relevant current events and issues for discussion in class, as time permits.
