Machinery Design is an important technological basic course in mechanical engineering education. It aims to develop engineering students' competence of machine design that is the primary concern of machinery manufacturing and the key to manufacturing good products. This course is required to provide engineering students - future engineers - with an elementary knowledge of machine design, to teach them the method, procedures and calculation of machine design, to train them in dealing with practical issues such as simplifying configurations of mechanical elements, establishing models of mathematics and physics, selecting materials, processes and heat-treatments, understanding inspection and maintenance of machinery. Design is a process of innovation and creation. This might be the only course in mechanical engineering which is with the word "design".
Teaching: After two chapters concerning basic principles of machinery design, this course takes 40 hours to focus on several typical mechanical elements including screws, key joints, belts, gears, worm gears, sliding bearings, rolling bearings, clutches, and shafts.
Experiments: In order to improve the understanding on the principles and working behaviors of machine components, the experiments of screwing and stress, efficiency of belt transmission, and the structure of gear box are prepared for students.
Project design: After the course of Machinery Design, there is a follow-up course, Project Design for Machinery Design, which is a required course for students to go through a whole design process and obtain design skills of mechanical system.
