Brief Introduction/课程简介

This course is acknowledged as a provincial-level high-quality course for foreign students and selected as an excellent example posted on the official website of Jiangsu Provincial Department of  Education (http://english.jsjyt.edu.cn/2020-09/18/c_537580.htm).

This is a 2-credit course introducing coastal morphodynamics with a special focus on muddy coasts (e.g., their spatial distribution, geomorphologic characteristics, sediment properties, hydrodynamics, evolution and engineering applications). The course “Estuarine and Coastal Dynamics”, in which some fundamental knowledge is introduced, serves as a good background for this course. In total, it is consisted of 32 class hours, distributed within about 5 weeks’time.

The student will learn basic concepts and simple applications in the broad field of muddy coasts. Upon completion of this course, the student is expected to be able to:
(1) define muddy coasts and tell the differences compared to sandy coasts;
(2) calculate the shear stresses of tidal currents and waves;
(3) acquaint mud sediment properties and transport;
(4) understand the mechanisms governing the pattern formation and evolution of muddy coasts;
(5)  apply simple theories to real muddy coasts for management.

(6) know Chinese remarkable coastline, understand “Ecological civilizationconstruction”, “the Belt and Road” and other strategic ideas, and cultivate thespirit of knowing and loving China.

对于有兴趣选修本课程的中国学生:《Advanced Coastal Dynamics (高等海岸动力学)》是江苏高校省级外国留学生英文授课精品课程,课程共2个学分(32个学时)。本课程是专门为留学生开设的研究生课程,该课程致力于使学生认识与掌握海岸水动力、泥沙运动、以及地貌演变的基本规律,侧重于介绍淤泥质海岸的自然成因及演变规律,了解淤泥质环境的海岸工程、海岸防护措施、资源利用与保护方法等,为进一步开展海岸动力数值模拟、港口海岸工程等工作以及从事相关科学研究打下基础。讲授过程中也充分融入课程思政内容,认知中国壮美绵长的海岸地貌,领会引领我国沿海地区绿色高质量发展的“生态文明建设”、“一带一路”等战略思想,培养知华、爱华精神。

Teaching methods and highlights/教学方法与特色

To maximize students' benefit and understanding of the course, we try our best to link theory with practice and invite the world-leading scientists and lecturers to deliver high-quality classes. Some highlights of teaching methods include:

(1) To improve students' understanding, we combine regular indoor teaching and outdoor field trips to deliver this course. Students enjoyed a lot during the field trips when they entered the wild. They know, by walking on the mud and viewing the sea, the knowledge we are delivering.

(2) To broaden students' horizon, we invite some international well-known scientists to deliever guest lectures for this course, including foreign academicians.


(3) To train students' presentation skills, we organize short seminars and the students are encouraged to do oral interpretation of knowledge learned.

Practice/实践环节

The practice of this course includes the following parts:

(1)A 2-3 day field trips to the Jiangsu coast;

(2)A visit to the laboratory related to the course.

本课程的实践环节主要包括如下方面:

(1)一个为期2到3天的江苏沿海现场考察;

(2)一次课程相关的实验室参观。
