课程介绍
Soil Mechanics. This course provides students with a working knowledge of the state-of-practice of foundation engineering, covering bearing capacity, settlement; lateral earth pressure and design of retaining and sheet-pile walls; and an introduction to deep foundations. The course is for students in the civil engineering major and serves as an essential prerequisite for continued study in the areas of construction and structural engineering. The course is delivered in lecture format, and concentrates on practice-oriented design problems in foundation engineering.

教学方法

 The attainment of course objectives is assessed based on homework andquizzes (35%), one midterm exam (30), and one final comprehensive exam (35%).

     Final grade criteria:           90 – 100%    =     A

80 – 89%  =    B

70 – 79%  =     C

60 – 69%  =     D

<60%        =     F

 

Homework Policy: Unless stated otherwise, homework is due in class on the duedate. Late homework will not be accepted. The work submitted (i.e.,discussion, spreadsheet, graphs, calculations, etc.) must be your own. You areallowed to discuss homework problems with classmates. However, copying will beconsidered a violation of the academic integrity, and zero will be given to theidentical homework. This is an engineering class. Accordingly, all work must bepresented neatly and legibly. Units must be specified and the final answersclearly marked. Follow the “Rules for homework assignments” at the end of thesyllabus. Points earned through quizzes will be counted with homework. Quizzescan be given at the beginning of a class; dates of quizzes will not beannounced.

The purpose of this course is to introduce senior undergraduate studentsin civil engineering the concepts and designs of

foundations, earth retainingstructures, and excavation systems. At the conclusion of this course, thestudent should be able to:

·        Describe the typical fielddrilling, sampling, and testing methods and equipment.

·        Describe the typical shallowfoundations.

·        Describe the typical deepfoundations.

·        Design shallow foundations.

·        Design driving pile foundationsconsidering bearing capacity and settlements.

·        Design typical earth retainingstructures (retaining walls and sheet pile walls)
