Introduction to the course
The Hotel Management Course could enable students majoring in tourism management better grasp the fundamental knowledge and practices of the hotel industry, and enhance their understanding and comprehensive capabilities in solving practical problems.
It could help students master and utilize the core concepts and terminology in the hotel management, and improve their interests and skills in reading literature related to the major.
Meanwhile, it could broaden the students’ vision, improve their structure of knowledge, and cultivate their ability in cross-cultural communication.
The course could make the students better understand the current situation, trends, and hot issues of the hospitality industry both at home and abroad as well as academic frontiers.
All in all, the course could not only help students master the hotel knowledge, the cutting-edge trends both in the practices of the hotel management and academic research, but also improve their English level in this particular major.  The ultimate purpose of this course is to train and cultivate students into high quality professional majors possessing the international perspective for the Chinese tourism industry.

Purpose of this course

The aim of this course is to enable students to comprehensively and objectively understand features of hospitality industry, basic theories in hotel management, organizational structure, daily operations and management of each department in a hotel.  Meanwhile, it helps students to cultivate the following abilities such as cooperation, ordination, communication and service, as well as etiquette sense and value of thrift.  This course does not only help students to learn industry knowledge, but also to enhance their English skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating as well as hotel English.  In addition, methodology in doing the scientific research in social science such as organizational behaviors will be introduced, and analytical software such as SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science) and AMOS will be tapped. The ultimate purpose of this course is to enable students to apply what they have learned in school to practices in our country’s economic development.

Course content

The course content consists of two sections: class teaching and practicum.  

Class teaching

The first part: Operations and management in Front Office Department, Housekeeping Department, Food & Beverage Department, Security Department, Engineering Department, Accounting Department, Sales & Marketing Department, and Human Resources Department.

The second part: Steps and methods in searching for academic articles when students need to write a graduation thesis, etc.;

The third part: Methods in reading English literature, structure of an English article in empirical research;

The last part: How to conduct scientific research in social science with analytical software, such as elements in demography such as gender, age, marital status, education, income, tenure, etc.

 

Practicum section

The teacher will organize students to visit full service hotels in Huzhou city, Zhejiang Province to get an overall impression of how the hotel is actually operated and managed in the spare time.

Teaching methodology

The following methods both inside class and outside class are integrated to enhance students interest in learning this course/major and improve their English skills as well as their abilities in analyzing and solving problems in their future career.   

The methods in class teaching are as follows:

Teachers lecture;

English presentation by students;

Group discussion;

Role play;

Situation simulation

Course related presentation and

English games.

 

The extra-curriculum methods are as follows:

Study group;

English salon;

Utilization of practice base both on campus and off campus

Invite both hoteliers and foreign teachers to make lectures for students.

Evaluation methods

The scores of this course consist of two parts, namely marks at ordinary time and scores of final examination at the end of each semester.  Marks at ordinary time are evaluated on the following aspects: homework, class performance and attendance record, taking up 40% of the total score for this course.  The score for final examination takes up 60% of the total score.  The examination paper covers the entire textbook plus the additional knowledge lectured by the teacher.  The purpose of the written examination is to evaluate students capabilities in aspects like memorization, comprehension, simple application and comprehensive application.  Meanwhile there is appropriate proportion in categories of easiness and difficulties of the written examination such as very easy, easy, difficult and very difficult, and types of written examination cover from definition of certain concepts, question and answer to elaboration and case study.
